Between Presence and Absence work statement

The object inside the casing is seen as a dual image. It is an art work in which a special film is adhered to a clear acrylic　frame that offers different perspectives that vary when seen different angles.

This implies that anyone can see the same object differently on their point of view or standpoint.

Once the artwork is illuminated by the exhibition’s display spotlight, its brightness and color becomes more intense. However, when it is displayed near a window under direct sunlight, it produces gradually increasing color in the morning light, then becomes duller towards evening.

The object inside the casing, which is inspired by an antique frame, is made from materials such as FRP (fiber reinforced plastic) or sometimes a store-bought frame. I emphasize a sense of deprivation by removing the portrait which should be in the frame. It is my intention with this art to blur the hue, and introduce a sense of emotional loss and uncertainness like a loved one who will someday be gone.

Installation

A dark object and a light-box are incased in an acrylic frame covered with a special chemical film. LED light under the object cycles a set of colors gradually. The appearance of the object flows and alternates because of the ten cycling colors of the LED light. In a darkened room, the colors of the LED light looms brilliantly beyond the box. The audience will experience the indescribable hue of the lights and the various apparitions of the object.

This slowly, ever-changing artwork appears differently within the light and dark change of the exhibition sites. This was created based on my perception that art is a device to stimulate a visual sense. My intention for this artwork is to imply that any occurrence will reveal a different aspect depending on the individual’s feelings or stand point.
